Okay, I Built the Thinking Classroom...Now What?

During the session, participants will engage in a sixth-grade ratios and proportions thin slicing task. They will begin by huddling up to recall how to find equivalent fractions and apply this to solving ratio and proportions problems using different representations. Facilitators will assign participants to random groups of three at whiteboards. Following problem solving, attendees will return to their seats to consolidate the lesson using pre-selected problems. Participants will head back to whiteboards to create notes to their future selves using a graphic organizer, then return to their seats one more time to tackle mild, medium, and spicy check your understanding problems. Finally, participants will use the Tuning Protocol to ask clarifying questions and give warm and cool feedback.

New Light Through an Old Window: Looking at the Foundations of Teaching to Understand How to Build a Thinking Classroom

Teaching mathematics is a rich and dynamic practice that sits at the intersection of mathematics, psychology, and beliefs. In this session, we revisit some of the foundational ideas that shape teaching and learning and examine them through the lens of Building Thinking Classrooms. By looking at familiar concepts in new ways, participants will gain fresh insights into both the complexities of teaching and the work of building and sustaining thinking classrooms.

MTSS in Elementary Mathematics: A Case Study
