What does it really mean to give every student a genuine opportunity to learn? Maximizing Opportunity to Learn: A Guide for Equitable and Ambitious Instruction by PEL's own Tom Nobili, Isobel Stevenson, and Andrew Volkert tackles that question head-on. The book introduces the Heuristic for Equitable and Adaptive Teaching (HEAT) — a research-grounded model that combines high expectations with high-leverage instructional practices to ensure all students, especially those historically marginalized, are positioned as capable and able to achieve at high levels. It also challenges some of the field's most common instructional practices, showing how they often undermine equity rather than advance it.
Don't miss your chance to grab a copy and have it signed by the authors at BTCC26!

Roots Before Results: Cultivating the Conditions for Authentic Thinking Classrooms
Tuesday June 30, 2026 8:00am - 8:55am EDT
In this session, participants will explore how to plant and nurture the “growing conditions” needed for Thinking Classrooms. Through hands-on, cognitively engaging tasks, we’ll examine how choice, access, and experience—not mandates or formulas—help teachers build deep conceptual roots. Our districtwide journey of cultivating systems that support the 14 practices will be shared and we will invite reflection on barriers, opportunities, and leadership intersections. Participants will analyze their own contexts and identify actionable “tweaks” to strengthen their implementation journey.By participating in this session, attendees will be able to:Identify district and school “growing conditions”—systems, structures, and cultural factors—that support or hinder the implementation of Thinking Classroom practices.Analyze how choice, access, and experiential learning deepen conceptual understanding and foster authentic engagement for teachers.Reflect on their own district’s context to notice strengths, barriers, and opportunities in their implementation journey.Apply actionable “tweaks” that strengthen their leadership approach and support teachers in building sustainable Thinking Classrooms.Design next steps for cultivating their district’s “growing conditions,” aligning instructional research with system-level coherence.

Subtraction is the Achilles Heel, But It Doesn't Have To Be
Tuesday June 30, 2026 8:00am - 8:55am EDT
Building Thinking Classrooms and other pedagogcal structures require teachers to be flexible in the moment responding to the thinking of their students, but in my experience as a consultant for 7 years, I have found teachers' own conceptual understanding of subtraction is limited to the traditional US algorithm. I am hoping to either begin or to deepen participants' ownership of various flexible strategies and also various models that can be used to make this thinking visible.  In this way, teachers can be sure to be providing access to each and every student to use strategies that make sense to them and for the numbers they are asked to calculate with. After this session, participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of the operation of subtraction, how these strategies can be applied to all sets of numbers, models that can help these strategies visible, as well activities and routines they can incorporate in their classrooms to develop these understandings by their students.

Teaching Precalculus Through the Toolkit Functions: A Thinking Classroom Approach
Tuesday June 30, 2026 8:00am - 10:10am EDT
This session offers a clear, adaptable framework for teaching precalculus through the 11 toolkit functions in ways that feel coherent, student-centered, and aligned with Building Thinking Classrooms practices. Rather than memorizing isolated transformation rules, participants explore how the toolkit functions can anchor a semester-long arc that helps students recognize structure, connect function families, and link graphing to solving equations. Through thin-sliced tasks, vertical non-permanent surface work, and purposeful gallery walks, we build from parent functions to layered transformations and increasingly complex equations. Participants gain ready-to-use tasks, questioning strategies, and consolidation routines that elevate thinking, collaboration, and joy in the precalculus classroom.

From Shakespeare to Genetics: BTC Across the Curriculum
Tuesday June 30, 2026 9:15am - 10:10am EDT
BTC isn't just for mathematics anymore. It is now being used across the curriculum—from language arts to science, from social studies to coding. In this session, I present a framework for thinking about BTC across disciplines and share some of my favorite cross-curricular lessons from the past year. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of what makes BTC transferable and how its core principles can be used to promote thinking in any subject area.

Helping Families Understand BTC: From Deficit Protection to Asset Celebration
Tuesday June 30, 2026 9:15am - 10:10am EDT
Building Thinking Classrooms can transform student learning — but it can also create confusion for families who are used to traditional math instruction. In this 55‑minute session, we explore the communication strategies, mindset shifts, and practical tools that help us move from defending BTC to helping families truly see the strengths in their children’s thinking.
Through shared stories, three key paradigm shifts, and concrete examples (notes, homework, and “you’re not teaching”), we will examine how to make learning visible, reduce back‑and‑forth emails, support vulnerable learners who may withdraw early in BTC, and build trust with families and admin.
This workshop is designed for educators who want to communicate with clarity, confidence, and compassion as their BTC practice grows — and who want families to become partners in celebrating students’ thinking.

Lighting the Fuse: Coaching Approaches That Ignite BTC Momentum in Schools
Tuesday June 30, 2026 9:15am - 10:10am EDT
This session supports instructional coaches and teacher-leaders in embedding BTC practices into the professional learning they already lead. Rather than adding a new initiative, it demonstrates how BTC instructional moves can strengthen existing district priorities and elevate adult learning. Participants will explore how to design PD that reflects the key traits of a BTC classroom—engaging, collaborative, intellectually rigorous, and grounded in visible thinking—through real district examples of how presenters “lit the fuse” by modeling BTC strategies in high-leverage areas such as lesson planning, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and making student thinking visible. Attendees will leave with ready-to-use structures, adaptable protocols, and practical examples to deepen instructional impact and build coherence across professional learning systems.

Integrating Technology in a 6-12 Thinking Classroom
Tuesday June 30, 2026 9:15am - 10:10am EDT
Technology can serve as a powerful platform to greatly enhance students' active learning experiences in a thinking classroom. We will deeply explore curricular tasks through which interacting with technology as an exploratory, computational, and coding tool can greatly and meaningfully enhance student groups' active learning experiences.   Here, we emphasize effective use of technology for learning in a thinking classroom.  Participants will learn, through powerful, interactive, ready-to-use task examples, different ways through which technology can enhance student engagement within thier learning by exploring, computing, and coding. With respect to teaching, we will explore interactive task examples ways through which technology can help teachers foster hints and extensions, provide a platform for students to create and construct, and also code. We will also explore how we can effectively use technology to implement variation theory within the creation of thin-slice activities, as well as exploring the importance and vitalness of its use within students' active learning experiences. We will also explore and discuss alterations and additions teachers can implement within an existing thinking-classroom environment to help maximize student engagement and flow.

Where Am I in My Learning?: Cultivating Student Responsibility Through Navigation Tools and Student-Led Data
Tuesday June 30, 2026 9:15am - 11:25am EDT
Building navigation tools is one thing; getting them into students' hands to drive their own next steps is another. In a true Building Thinking Classroom, data should not be a secret held by the teacher—it should be student-led. When secondary students take ownership of their data, accountability is naturally replaced by responsibility.

In this interactive, hands-on workshop, participants will step into the shoes of middle and high school students to experience a series of practical micro-moves designed to foster data autonomy. We will deconstruct the process of "shaking and sorting" to build navigation tools, intentionally embracing imperfection over a polished final product.

Through collaborative, simulated activities, attendees will explore how to use these tools both formatively and summatively. Come ready to collaborate, experience, and walk away with a concrete blueprint for putting secondary students in the driver's seat of their own assessment.

Beyond Skip Counting: Developing Multiplicative Reasoning
Tuesday June 30, 2026 10:30am - 11:25am EDT
Too often when students are unable to retrieve a multiplication fact from memory, they resort to skip counting to figure it out rather than thinking multiplicatively about relationships to other nearby facts or to breaking apart the factors in flexible ways that are more efficient to them. Participants will learn about the learning trajectory from counting strategies to additive strategy of skip counting to deriving basic facts using multiplicative reasoning.  Further, participants will walk away with routines and games that can be implemented within a BTC classroom that help facilitate this fact fluency journey for each and every student.

Integrating BTC with District Requirements & Recommended Curriculums
Tuesday June 30, 2026 10:30am - 11:25am EDT
It is my hope that participants understand that just because their district says they have to teach a certain curriculum and they may even say they have to teach a certain component a certain way, that doesn’t mean there isn’t wiggle room to be able to allow some discourse and student engagement, if not in math, then in some other subject. They wouldn’t be at the conference if they weren’t looking for that way in.

Avoiding Implementation Burnout: How to Thrive as an Educator in the Thinking Classroom
Tuesday June 30, 2026 10:30am - 11:25am EDT

Beyond Tasks: Making Self-Evaluation Work in a Thinking Classroom
Tuesday June 30, 2026 10:30am - 11:25am EDT
Participants will leave this session with a clearer understanding of how student-facing rubrics and self-evaluation practices. Participants will leave this session with a clearer understanding of how student-facing rubrics and self-evaluation practices can be made meaningful and manageable. This presentation will share actionable strategies for these important, but underutilized elements of the BTC pedagogical approach. We’ll explore why this practice is so often left behind, the friction that prevents students from using rubrics effectively, and how to structure both the rubrics and the routines that support them. Participants will analyze examples of real rubrics from my geometry classroom: what worked, what didn’t, and how they evolved. They’ll consider the difference between rubrics for student self-evaluation and those used by teachers, and reflect on how to assess not just what we test, but what we truly value. We’ll also discuss strategies for helping students shift from passive receivers of feedback to active participants in their learning, with self-evaluation as a formative, forward-looking practice, not just a ritual before a test. Participants will leave with ideas, strategies, and the opportunity to revise or design their own rubric in collaboration with peers.

Integrating Technology in a 6-12 Thinking Classroom
Tuesday June 30, 2026 10:30am - 11:25am EDT

BTC & Learning Differences: Goes Together Like PB&J
Tuesday June 30, 2026 10:30am - 11:25am EDT
Students with neurodiverse profiles or learning disabilities often face unique challenges in traditional classrooms. The Building Thinking Classrooms framework, with its emphasis on collaborative and student-centered practices, offers powerful opportunities to meet these needs while benefiting all learners. By starting with a problem and implementing these strategies, educators can create an environment where students feel valued, capable, and empowered to think critically.Session Objectives:Start With a Problem:Demonstrate how beginning lessons with a meaningful problem, combined with connection-before-content activities, engages students immediately, builds community, activates prior knowledge, and sets the stage for collaborative thinking.Explore the Power of Randomization:Demonstrate how random groupings and seating arrangements minimize social hierarchies and increase opportunities for all students to engage meaningfully in collaborative problem-solving.Maximize Engagement Through VNPS:Highlight how vertical non-permanent surfaces encourage risk-taking and creative thinking by providing low-stakes opportunities to share ideas, test solutions, and iterate in real time.Use Navigation Tools for Clarity and Accessibility:Present the use of unit maps as a tool for scaffolding complex concepts and supporting executive functioning, ensuring students can navigate their learning journey with confidence.Incorporate Thinking-Focused Directions:Explain how concise, action-oriented directions, delivered while standing, support student autonomy and reduce cognitive load, allowing learners to begin thinking quickly without lengthy verbal instruction.Address Challenges and Share Solutions:Discuss potential obstacles educators may encounter when implementing these strategies, including starting with a problem and connection-before-content activities, and provide evidence-based solutions to overcome them.

Selling the Shift: Building Trust and Shared Purpose in a Thinking Classroom
When transitioning to a Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) model, student buy-in can often feel like a battle to be won. But what if we reframed it as a community-building process rooted in trust?

Born from continuous coaching cycles between a BTC coach and two secondary math teachers, this session explores how to move middle and high school students past the initial friction of BTC and into full ownership of their learning. We will share the exact, classroom-tested micro-moves utilized to foster a culture of vulnerability, where both teachers and students feel safe taking mathematical risks.

Grounded in qualitative data and driven by authentic student voice, this session highlights how transparency, continuous student feedback, and targeted Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies can transform classroom dynamics. By putting these human-centered practices at the forefront, we discovered a powerful shift: a classroom where mutual empathy and compassion flourished, and true responsibility naturally replaced rigid accountability. Attendees will walk away with actionable, secondary-tested techniques from a coach-teacher perspective to build deep trust, de-escalate resistance, and co-create a thriving community of thinkers.

Bite-Sized BTC: A Tweak a Week Toolkit for Instructional Leaders and Coaches
Tuesday June 30, 2026 1:00pm - 1:55pm EDT
Many coaches who have introduced BTC to their schools and supported the work may be in a place where keeping the momentum going may be difficult as PD is dedicated to other initiatives.  Coaches and leaders will learn more about how updates and best practices can be offered in real-time (without waiting for the next scheduled PD session) through a series called "A Tweak a Week".  These instructional moves and lesson design edits come directly from the BTC book, 6-12 task book, and sessions that my teachers and I have recently attended with Peter.  I'm hoping to give coaches and instructional leaders a new lens on how to continue supporting BTC practices in small and meaningful ways.

Stand, Choose, Retain: Using Vertical Menus & Spaced Retrieval to Make Professional Learning Stick
Tuesday June 30, 2026 1:00pm - 1:55pm EDT
Session Abstract: We tell students that learning happens when we think, yet we force teachers into sit-and-get PD that evaporates within 48 hours. It’s time to de-front the faculty meeting/professional learning sessions.  In this active session, Instructional Coaches and Leaders will experience the Vertical Menu. A framework that combines Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces (VNPS) with the science of Spaced Retrieval. You will learn to replace slide decks with Vertical Choice Menus that allow staff to self-select their learning pathway (differentiation) while engaging in active recall protocols that guarantee the learning sticks long after the session ends. By the end of this session, participants will:Experience the Vertical Menu: Participate in a differentiated professional learning simulation using VNPS to solve problems relevant to their specific professional mindset.Master 3 Retrieval Protocols: Learn three distinct, low-prep routines (Flashback 2, Brain Dump, Trojan Horse) to ensure previous PD content is constantly reactivated and retained.Design for Adult Retention: Walk away with a digital coaching starter pack that converts passive presentations into active, vertical retention tasks.

Seeing Kaden: The BTC Practices That Helped a Silent Thinker Find His Voice
Tuesday June 30, 2026 1:00pm - 1:55pm EDT
Participants will leave this session with a deeper understanding of how Building Thinking Classrooms practices can create access, agency, and belonging for learners who have historically struggled to participate or be seen, like Kaden, a student navigating dysgraphia and a neuronal migration disorder. Through his story, participants will gain insight into how shifting the learning environment, not the learner, can unlock a student’s ability to think, contribute, and thrive. I hope participants will leave with a clearer picture of the barriers students with dysgraphia and other learning differences face in traditional math classrooms, specific BTC practices that reduce those barriers, including strategies that make thinking visible without relying on writing intensive tasks, and practical examples of how these practices transformed Kaden’s engagement, confidence, and mathematical voice. It is also my hope that participants experience a renewed commitment to designing thinking centered experiences that honor neurodiverse learners’ strengths rather than focusing on their challenges. Ultimately, participants will leave inspired and equipped to “see” their own silent thinkers and use BTC structures to help every student find their voice.

Designing Spaces for Thinking: Transform Your Math Classroom
Tuesday June 30, 2026 1:00pm - 1:55pm EDT
The goal of this session is to inspire teachers, educators, and school leaders to reimagine classroom spaces in ways that foster a true thinking environment. Traditional setups often prioritize desks and chairs, but do these arrangements actually support deep engagement and collaboration? In a Building Thinking Classroom, students spend most of their time standing and working at Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces, which raises important questions: If students are rarely seated, what purpose do tables and chairs serve? Are they essential tools for learning or potential distractions? This session will challenge assumptions about classroom design and explore how intentional space planning can transform the way students think and learn.

Formative Assessment: From Informing Teaching to Informing Learning
Tuesday June 30, 2026 1:00pm - 1:55pm EDT
Formative assessment has traditionally been viewed as the gathering of information that informs teaching. But what happens when we recast formative assessment as the gathering of information that informs learning? In this session, I explore how this shift changes not only the purpose of formative assessment, but also the way it is designed, implemented, and experienced by students. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of why this shift matters and practical strategies for implementing this important BTC practice in their own classrooms.

Slice, Slice Baby: Grade 6-8 Thin Slicing Secrets Revealed
Tuesday June 30, 2026 1:00pm - 3:10pm EDT
What keeps students in the game instead of checking out? Come join us as we reveal the secrets behind building successful Thin Slices. The practice of sequencing tasks through carefully incremented steps may be one of the most powerful ways to build and maintain FLOW in a Thinking Classroom. There’s no such thing as a perfect thin slice, but intentional sequencing is far more connected and responsive than the fragmented way most curricula organize concepts. Thin-slicing helps students make sense of the big ideas by experiencing mathematics as connected, coherent thinking rather than isolated skills. In this session, you’ll experience thin-slicing as a learner, examine what makes it work, and begin building your own task sequences to keep every learner thinking and moving forward.

The Power of BTC: How can BTC bring excitement to the least creative lessons in your curriculum?
Tuesday June 30, 2026 1:00pm - 3:10pm EDT
When I talk about BTC or facilitate workshops, I often begin by engaging teachers in rich, low-floor, high ceiling tasks. As with students, beginning this way is incredibly powerful. However, in my opinion, the real power of BTC in the classroom is the way it transforms repetitive and mundane tasks. Too often, I have seen teachers lean towards only using BTC with rich tasks. I hope that participants will walk away from my session with the confidence to use BTC to enrich even the most procedural, repetitive parts of their curricula.

Demystifying BTC Style Assessment and Grading
Tuesday June 30, 2026 2:15pm - 3:10pm EDT
BTC style assessment and grading is the fourteenth and final BTC practice. It is one that many teachers find implementation to be difficult, confusing, or overwhelming. As I am in my fourth full year of implementing BTC style grading as outlined in chapter 14, I will discuss how, when, and where I collect grading data and how I implemented it in my school’s Learning Management System, which is designed more for traditional style grading. I hope that by demystifying BTC style grading, participants will leave with a better understanding of ways to gather BTC grade data and develop a sense of how this can work in practice.

Mapping Math Success: A Student-Centered Navigation Tool
Tuesday June 30, 2026 2:15pm - 3:10pm EDT
This session offers practical tips on developing and implementing student navigation tools which are visual unit roadmaps that map specific learning objectives to concrete examples of basic, intermediate, and advanced problems. By clearly defining the progression of mastery, the tool empowers students to track their own proficiency and take active ownership of their learning journey. They bring clarity to learning objectives and assessment pathways within a middle or high school mathematics environment. We will demonstrate their versatile applications in the thinking classroom: as a roadmap for daily objectives, as a powerful self-assessment and reflection tool for student ownership, and as a review and formative assessment aid for targeted feedback. Participants will walk through a collaborative, iterative process for designing these tools, which feature explicit, leveled example problems. Attendees will leave with the specific process necessary to start creating their own navigation tools and a clear understanding of how this approach promotes engagement, builds confidence, fosters student autonomy, and offers a scalable strategy for district-wide coordination.
