Metacognition, Identity, and Reflection in a Thinking Classroom

Participants will walk away with practical, ready-to-implement routines that help students reflect on their mathematical identity and thinking throughout the year. They will learn how structures like “Math History Timelines,”by MidSchoolMath’s Gladys Grahm, student self-assessment, reflection sprints after BTC tasks, and 1:1 learning conversations can deepen student ownership and strengthen the final BTC practices around responsibility, perseverance, and “Where to next?”Teachers will leave with concrete examples, templates, and prompts they can use immediately to help students notice their growth, name their strategies, and understand themselves better as mathematical thinkers. The session emphasizes identity and agency first, with data and assessment serving as one optional lens for reflection.

Okay, I Built the Thinking Classroom...Now What?
Tuesday June 30, 2026 9:15am - 10:10am EDT
During the session, participants will engage in a sixth-grade ratios and proportions thin slicing task. They will begin by huddling up to recall how to find equivalent fractions and apply this to solving ratio and proportions problems using different representations. Facilitators will assign participants to random groups of three at whiteboards. Following problem solving, attendees will return to their seats to consolidate the lesson using pre-selected problems. Participants will head back to whiteboards to create notes to their future selves using a graphic organizer, then return to their seats one more time to tackle mild, medium, and spicy check your understanding problems. Finally, participants will use the Tuning Protocol to ask clarifying questions and give warm and cool feedback.
