About me
Margaret Nickerson is an instructional coach serving two elementary schools near Columbia, South Carolina. With more than 18 years of classroom experience spanning Preschool through third grade, she brings a deep understanding of early childhood education, literacy development, and inquiry-based learning to her work with teachers and students.
She has launched 3 MakerSpaces in her schools to promote creativity and problem-solving and has been a key leader in expanding Building Thinking Classrooms across her district preschool through high school! What began in 2023 as a small university-partnered book study quickly grew into widespread implementation of BTC practices. After attending the 2025 Building Thinking Classrooms Coaching Institute in California, Margaret continues to support teachers and coaches in fostering collaborative, thinking-centered classrooms.
While her professional roots are grounded in literacy and inquiry, Building Thinking Classrooms has sparked a renewed passion for mathematics, positioning her as an advocate for meaningful and innovative instruction across content areas.
